What Have I Done To Deserve This? – Pet Shop Boys and Dusty Springfield
Recorded July into August 2014
I love how unique the Pet Shop Boys are. Even after 30 years of making records, they are still so creative and aren't afraid to try something new. Not only do I love their music, but I love what they've done for other artists too.
Even though Dusty was sporting a 80's haircut when she sang "What Have I Done To Deserve This", I always think of her (and her hair) in a 60's setting, and that’s what gave me the inspiration for this mix. Ok, I was also inspired by Ann Margrock and her little arm-dance-thing in the Flintstones cartoon. The chorus melody was already very “Phil Specter”, so it made sense to go that route. I actually got chills when I heard the chorus with the new arrangement.
Technical nerd talk: I doubled up the beat and slowed down the tempo of the vocals. The drums had to have energy but not feel too fast or the song would sound like an aerobics track. I tried to fill up the arrangement to give the mix that “wall of sound” while using a chamber reverb to get that Motown sound. Horns added that pop finish to the mix.
Tom and I met Neil and Chris twice: once after one of their concerts and another time at at small venue in lower Manhattan (we both went to see a We Are The World Trade Center perform). Both “boys" were super nice. We hung out with them for the rest of the concert. I got to talk shop with Chris!
