I Can’t Go For That – Hall & Oates
Recorded March into April 2013.
There is a reason Hall and Oates are the most successful duo in pop history: they are truly great.
I've been an H&O fan ever since I was a kid. I remember getting a piano book of all their hits and learning every song. I also remember doing Daryl Hall ad libs with my sister, "The woman is wild, ooooooooooh!"
"I Can't Go For That" is one of my favorite songs from the 80s. It is smooth and has a great groove. That bridge right before the chorus is just amazing.
I originally was working on different song, incorporating the arrangement to "I Can't Go For That" around those vocals (that might still happen!). Then, while browsing the internet, I ended up finding the original H&O vocals. One thing led to another and I ended up doing the exact opposite of what I started by building a new arrangement around the "I Can't Go For That" vocals.
As far as arranging and production goes, I started off reharmonizing the song, looking for different ways to bring out that euphoric feeling in the bridge. As you can hear, there's the original harmony (first bridge) and two variants. Went for a thumper kick for the rhythm track along with disco high hats and percussion elements from the original song. Two bass lines are going: one to ground the groove and the other to funk it up.
