Frozen – Madonna
Recorded March - April 2014.
When I began to mix this down, it started snowing outside. The Universe has a sense of humor. Enough with this cold weather!
"Frozen" was taken from Madonna's "Ray of Light" album. In my opinion, this album is Madonna's best work to date. I feel like she approached this album from an artistic angle instead of a commercial one. "Frozen" was the first single released from the album. Musically and visually, it was a big departure for Madonna.
I tried a few different styles with this one. I kept on hearing new harmony with the melody, so I worked that out first. Some of the styles I was experimenting with didn't quite work with the new chords. I didn't want to abandon the harmonic idea I had, so I decided to head in a completely different direction. The samba arrangement gave me that "Ah HA!" moment, so I went with it (surprise).
I began the arrangement with a single guitar accompanying the vocal and it sounded really nice. Because of that, I decided that I would try to make the whole mix sound like an acoustic band. I purposely did not clean up any timing to make it feel more authentic (I really had to put my OCD on hold!).
It didn't make sense to go into this huge orchestral break after the 2nd chorus (the way the original song does), so I decided to give a little nod to Basia and Danny White. They still are such inspirations to me.
Brazilian Bossa Nova and Samba and among my favorite styles of music. They mixes nice melodic lines and interesting harmony, smooth chord changes with a beat that makes you move. I hope you enjoy this mix as much as I enjoy Samba!
